How to Get Appointed to Write Surety Bonds
By Jeremiah Hart, Head of Surety Underwriting · Updated September 24, 2026
Circle Surety appoints independent insurance agents online, at no cost, in a few minutes. You need an active property and casualty license, errors and omissions coverage, and a signed producer agreement. Once approved, typically within an hour, you can write your first bond immediately, in every state where your agency is licensed.
What a surety appointment is
An appointment is a surety provider's authorization for your agency to place bonds through it. It sets who you are, where you are licensed, what you can write, and how you are paid. Without one, you can point a client to someone else, but you cannot quote or issue the bond yourself.
Traditionally, an agency collected appointments one carrier at a time, each with its own paperwork, production expectations, and portal. Circle Surety replaces that with a single producer agreement: one appointment, every bond type in the catalog, every sales channel, and the carriers behind it handled for you.
Two routes to an appointment
Direct carrier appointments. You apply to each surety carrier, meet its volume and experience requirements, and learn its systems. Carriers are selective about new appointments, and an agency without a surety track record may find them hard to get. The upside is a direct relationship for agencies with a large, established surety book.
One appointment through a platform. You sign one producer agreement with a provider such as Circle Surety, which holds the carrier relationships. You get access to the whole catalog on day one, quoting and issuance online, and commission credited to your agency on every bond. This is the natural route for an agency adding surety, or for one that wants to stop managing several carrier portals.
Neither route is wrong. Established surety specialists sometimes hold both.
Who this is built for
- Property and casualty agencies adding surety because clients keep asking for it.
- Agencies with a surety book that want one dashboard instead of several carrier portals.
- Agencies whose clients are contractors, auto dealers, mortgage or freight brokers, notaries, or estates, the people who are required to carry bonds.
Requirements
Circle Surety asks for three things:
- An active property and casualty producer license, resident or non-resident. You write bonds in the states where your agency is licensed.
- Errors and omissions coverage.
- A signed producer agreement. The agency owner or an authorized signer signs it electronically.
There is no fee to be appointed, no minimum volume, and no commitment. You do not need an appointment of your own with any carrier, and no separate surety license or designation exists.
The five-step application
The application is online and takes a few minutes.
- Contact. Your name, email, and phone.
- Jurisdiction. The state where you are licensed.
- License lookup. Enter your license number. Circle Surety looks it up in the NAIC producer database and shows the match, with your NPN and license type, so there is nothing to upload.
- Agency details. Legal name and address of the agency.
- Agreement. Review and sign the producer agreement. If you are not the owner or authorized signer, enter their email and Circle Surety sends them a secure link; onboarding completes when they sign.
What happens after you apply
Circle Surety verifies your license and reviews the application. Approval is typically within an hour of applying. Once approved you can write your first bond immediately; there is no waiting period.
What you get once appointed
- A dashboard for applications, issued bonds, documents, and commission tracked down to the bond.
- A branded subdomain at youragency.circlesurety.com, ready in minutes, where clients quote, sign, and pay on their own.
- A client link to send by email, text, or WhatsApp.
- A quote widget for the website your agency already has.
- Direct entry from the dashboard for the clients who want you to handle it.
- The catalog: contract, license and permit, court, and notary bonds, plus nonstandard risk and custom requests, filtered by state.
- The bonding line of credit for contractor clients who want to be underwritten once and draw bonds as they win work.
What it costs
Nothing. There is no appointment fee, no platform fee, no minimum, and no commitment.
Before you apply
Have your license number and your agency's legal name and address handy. If someone else will sign the producer agreement, have their email ready. That is all the preparation the application needs.
Frequently asked questions

Which states can I write surety bonds in?
The states where your agency holds an active property and casualty license. Circle Surety operates in all 50 states, and one appointment covers every state where you are licensed.
